Introspection was written and performed in 2024 by Paul J.W. Schauenburg and Þórður Hallgrímsson. The piece makes use of a Paetzold contrabass recorder with a contact microphone on the inside, a microphone placed in the center of the hall, and live electronics (operated live by Þórður in the video).
Periodic Orbits of Tetration for tenor recorder and electronics was written in 2023 by Paul J.W. Schauenburg. The electronics consist of a series of delays and pitch shifters, shifting the sound up by one octave with each one second delay. Different ways of rhythmical interlocking with this delay are used throughout the piece, with the live sound moving in and out of sync with the delayed sound.
A Partial Ordering of Knots for alto recorder solo was written in 2022 by Paul J.W. Schauenburg.
Borromean Rings for basset recorder in f and electronics was written in early 2021 by Paul J.W. Schauenburg. The piece is based on a five-fold multi-tap delay in a regular rhythm. Simple melodic lines and arpeggi are timed in a way that creates an “echo counterpoint” throughout the piece. Different panning of each single delay creates changing panning patterns between the different delays throughout the piece, sometimes making successive events come from opposite sides, sometimes creating an illusion of movement.
“Resvellies-vous” by Guillaume Dufay is the piece that gave trio Le Réveil its name. Throughout their collaboration, the ensemble played this piece many times. Here it is played on a set of Renaissance consort instruments, specifically a tenor in c’, a basset in f, and a bass in c.
“The Jogger” for recorder quartet was written by Dick Koomans for Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet in 1996. Here it is played by Hidehiro Nakamura, Kristy van Dijk, Gabriel Belkheiri, and Paul J.W. Schauenburg in 2018, including some of the players’ own additions.
